Choice Point Principle No.3: Be The Change

“You must be the change you want to see in the world” ~ Mahatma Gandhi, Indian political and spiritual leader (1869 – 1948)

Be the Change helps us as individuals to appreciate that as we change, our reality changes and to change the world, or something in the world, we need to start by changing ourselves. If we transform ourselves, then the environment or organisation we are part of will change and it will move towards transforming the world. Thus, the world reflects us in many ways.

So what does this mean?

If we want to make the world we live in a better place, we need to look at global problems and ask what this is reflecting in our personal world. This takes deep change if we’re to make deep change in the world.

Let’s look at a few examples:

Looking at the environment, if we want to clean up the world then we need to clean up our bodies. We can examine what this means for us. We can look at diet, lifestyle, how we treat our bodies. Do we smoke or drink? Do we take exercise? Is the mind clean or cluttered? As we clean up inside, so we move towards cleaning up our world.

From a financial perspective, then, if we want to see our nations’ or continents’ finances balanced then we need to take a look at our own. We need to balance our own personal finances. If we want an end to war and conflict we need to find the conflicts inside ourselves. Are there conflicts in our immediate environments – at home or at work? Are we part of any personal or social conflicts? Or looking even more personal, are there conflicts in your own mind? Is there a conflict between what you do and what you want to do, for instance?

Extending this to waste, if we want to see a reduction in global consumption and waste then we need to look at our own personal consumptions. If global overconsumption is a result of a ‘more-more-more’ philosophy, then we need to look at where this applies in our personal lives.

In these examples, we see how a change in ourselves can result in a change in the world. One of Choice Point’s objectives is to aid us to be the change.
